Worktop Strips and Seals for Kitchen Worktops
Where two worktops meet, where a worktop runs up to a wall, or where it ends at a cooker or a run of units, the join needs closing. Left open, that gap lets water down into the chipboard core of the worktop — and a laminate worktop swollen from underneath cannot be repaired, only replaced. Worktop strips and seals close those joins cleanly and keep water out.

Types of Worktop Trim
Joining strips bridge the gap where two worktops butt together in a straight line — for example along a long run or where a worktop meets an appliance. The strip covers the join and seals it against water.
End caps finish the exposed end of a worktop, such as where a run ends beside a cooker or at a doorway. They give a clean edge and stop the core soaking up moisture.
Corner joints close the join where two worktops meet at 90 degrees, as in an L-shaped kitchen.
Back-edge sealing strips seal the join between the worktop and the wall behind it — the line where spills and splashes collect. This is also sold as a splashback seal or a worktop upstand seal.
Choosing the Right Size and Finish
Most kitchen worktops are 28mm, 30mm, 38mm or 40mm thick. Measure the thickness of your worktop before ordering, as joining strips and end caps are sized to match. A strip that is too shallow will not cover the edge; one too deep will not sit flush.
Finishes run from silver and brushed aluminium through to gold and coloured options. For a discreet result, match the strip to the worktop or to the other metalwork in the kitchen; for laminate that imitates stone or wood, a brushed aluminium strip usually sits more comfortably than a bright silver one.
Fitting
Most joining strips and end caps are screw-fixed to the worktop and bedded on a thin line of clear silicone sealant, which does the actual waterproofing. Cut the strip to length with a fine-tooth hacksaw, position it over the join, mark and drill the fixing holes, run a bead of sealant along the join, then screw the strip down and wipe away the squeeze-out before it sets.
Back-edge and plinth sealing strips clip or stick into place and rely on their flexible lip rather than screws. Whichever type you use, the surface must be clean and dry for the seal to hold.
Why Sealing the Worktop Matters
The damage from an unsealed worktop is slow and hidden. Water works into the join over weeks, the chipboard core swells, the laminate lifts at the edge, and by the time it shows the worktop is beyond saving. A few pounds of trim and a tube of sealant at fitting time prevents a full worktop replacement later — which is why fitters seal every join as a matter of course.
